The Beepster Junior
from
Warren Associates
What is the Beepster Jr? It is a small program which can send messages to
tone only, digital and alpha pagers from nearly any standard PC compatible
computer equipped with a serial baud modem.
Who needs it? Anyone who has to keep track of several people with pagers
will find it very helpful. Some companies buy a copy for each laptop and
others get a single copy for their receptionist. If you have a person
that generally does all the paging, this system will free up their time
for more important tasks.
Once the system is set up, all you need to do is enter your message (digital
or alpha), move the cursor to the user to whom you wish to send the message,
and press ENTER. The program will take care of the rest of the process of
sending the message.
The demonstration program will handle up to 15 users and their pagers. The
registered version is able to handle up to 30 users. Once the software is
registered, the right side of the display is used for the second column of
15 users.
The demonstration program will expire 60 days after it is installed on a
computer. If you do not intend to register the program, you will have to
delete your BEEPJR.CFG file and install the software again. Make sure you
print out your user information before it times out! Press P from the main
menu to print a user list on your printer.
You may need to contact your paging service provider and find out their
alpha protocol, baud rate, and telephone number. Once you have this
information you are ready to configure the System Setup.
Remember that you have online help everywhere in the system. Press F1 at any
point for specific information about the current operation. If you want a
more descriptive explanation about the message displayed on the bottom of
the screen, press F9 to activate the online guide. The online guide option
is a list of all the messages the software can generate, why they are
generated, and how to diagnose and prevent future problems.
If you have to dial the telephone area code to call the number, you also
need to enter the area code as well. On all calls which do not require you
to enter the area code to dial, do NOT enter the area code! This is how the
system decides how to dial the number!
The Dial Command string may need to be changed if your telephone system
needs a prefix digit to get an outside line. If there is nothing in the Dial
command string, it will default to "ATDT" for a standard tone dial.
Command Line Parameters:
Type BEEPJR HELP for the following list of supported command line options:
Beepster Junior Command Line Options:
COM0 Find active modem and com port.
COM1 Select COM1 as the modem com port.
COM2 Select COM2 as the modem com port.
COM3 Select COM3 as the modem com port.
COM4 Select COM4 as the modem com port.
COLOR Enable Color display mode.
DETECT List all installed com ports.
LCD Enable LCD display mode.
LOCK Lock database additions, changes and deletions.
LOG Write all pager messages to BEEPJR.LOG file.
REZ Make program resident CTRL-ALT-B activates.
MONO Enable monochrome display mode.
NOLOG Disable page message logging.
UNLOCK Allow database additions, changes and deletions.
Some of these command line options make changes in the configuration file.
This stores the option as the default state for the future operation of the
program. Once an option is enabled, it stays enabled until disabled by
another command line option.
The REZ option will make the program install itself and then return to DOS.
From then on, all you need is to press CTRL-ALT-B and it will activate the
program and allow you to send pager messages. Once your message is sent,
pressing CTRL-ALT-B again will return to your previous program.
If you plan to use the resident version, make sure that you do not start a
page and then press CTRL-ALT-B to return to the foreground. This can be done
but will fail to send the page properly. Also, do not try to activate the
program under Windows or a Windows DOS box. Since the program is Windows
compatible, it is better to use the PIF file and use it as a non-resident
DOS application.
Once all the user and setup information is entered correctly, you have the
option of locking the database so changes are not made accidentally. Type
BEEPJR LOCK to start the program in "locked" mode and not allow additions,
deletions, or changes to data in the database.
Once the program has been locked, it will start back up in locked mode until
it is unlocked. To unlock the database, type BEEPJR UNLOCK and the program
will start up in unlocked mode.
All outgoing pages can be logged to an audit file called BEEPJR.LOG. To
enable this feature type BEEPJR LOG and the program will start logging any
pages sent properly. Unsuccessful pages are not logged.
To disable the logging of pages, type BEEPJR NOLOG.
The Beepster Junior program is windows compatible and will run in the
background under Microsoft Windows. To install the product under Windows,
add a new item to any group, and have it load the BEEPJR.PIF file. Make sure
you set the working directory to the directory where you installed the
system.
If you are running this program on either a monochrome or LCD display
system, you can set either mode from a command line option. Once a
particular mode has been enabled, it will remain set to that setting until
reset by another command line option.
BEEPJR LCD enable LCD color mode
BEEPJR MONO enable Monochrome mode
BEEPJR COLOR enable Color mode
The standard installation includes a entry logo. The user can disable the
logo display by using the parameter NOLOGO when starting the program. To
activate the logo again, use the parameter LOGO.
For multi-shift operations, you can build a directory for each shift. A
simple batch file can route you to the correct copy of The Beepster Jr and
load the appropriate shift database.
We also write custom paging applications to integrate pagers into existing
systems. Our Beepster Pro version operates on a network where any other
application can transmit pages out to users through the network. For some
businesses with key style phone systems, this can reduce the cost on
installation since only one telephone line is required for the entire
network. Give us a call to discuss your paging needs.
Our Beepster Server product works with multiple networks and sends any pages
queued from any specified network server.
